Feed on Some RSS Fruit
Apr 27th 2008Ellen WilsonBlogging
According to the illustriously omniscient authors of Men with Pens, Harry and James, May 1st is RSS Awareness Day. Apparently you can win all kinds of goodies and gadgets, which doesn’t concern me, but it may concern you. Check out their post on RSS for details.
Simply said, Real Simple Syndication (RSS) will bring the fruits of all your favorite bloggers up front and center to you and it will save you time and energy checking on all of these blogs.
I told them I would write about it, not that I usually do what I’m told, or kiss anyone’s ass (hey, I run a clean blog here!), but I thought it would be a good idea. I can now share the fruits of my labor, having recently added all of these blogs to my RSS feed list:
Obviously this has been more about you all than me, because really, don’t we all love getting linked out? It makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. And you Bloggers on Blogger don’t even know I’m linking to you! Tsk, tsk, tsk.
So who have you RSS’ed lately? And have I forgotten anyone on the list? Tell me if I have and I will add you. Really, do tell me. And tell me about some blogs I don’t know of, but would like to, so I can add them also.
Thank you very much.

Brett Legreeon 27 Apr 2008 at 4:37 pm 1Ellen,
This is a good list. I have most of the people here, but there are some new folks I’ve never met, so I’ll be checking them out.
Today I added Lives Less Ordinary to my RSS, thanks to you (on Twitter, I think, or perhaps it was a comment somewhere).
If I think of anyone you might like who isn’t here, I’ll let you know.
And, most importantly, thank you for including me on your list here!
Talk with you soon - Brett

Friaron 27 Apr 2008 at 6:22 pm 2Ummm…..I feel a bit embarassed here.
I’m been hearing about RSS, but I’ve been too shy to ask what it means.
In fact, it was only after reading Ellen’s posting today that I learned what the letters “RSS” stood for.
I’m one of these computer dilettantes who only learn what they need to know. I guess now I realize I need to know RSS. I will check out the Men with Pens’ article.
Maybe my resident computer guru Brett will also explain it to me. Preferably over a few beerz.

Ellen Wilsonon 27 Apr 2008 at 6:29 pm 3@Brett - Always the gentleman. Of course I would add you!
@Friar - Don’t feel bad, I am kind of techno challenged myself. I am still working my way around my own blog. In fact, I just learned that I had an RSS comment feed. Oh goodie!
Brett Legreeon 27 Apr 2008 at 6:35 pm 4@Ellen -
well, you know me… my parents did a good job
@Friar - yes, we can set you up. It isn’t that hard, like most things it is pretty easy, but as you know, we can only focus so much time on that which is important to us.
I know I could have learned WordPress and set up a local server and designed my own blog, but I had more important things to do and had James & Harry do it for me.
Your painting is more important to you than learning the intricacies of some of this stuff. Yeah, we’ll get together this week. We were going to chat about some other stuff anyway, so we’ll add a few more things to the list if you like!
Maybe someday you can teach me to paint…

Darren Daz Coxon 27 Apr 2008 at 7:43 pm 5I’m honored to be in such good company!
I think RSS is a great way to keep track of things especially if you are surfing mobile, on the bus, train etc. I put a RSS feed of my blog on my (woefully neglected yahoo360 page) and my often visited Facebook page! allowing people who are ghettoed under a social network to see what I’m writing in realtime without venturing into the deep dark forrest of the web! I wonder if there’s a widget to put an RSS feed on my MySpace page? Some of my friends appear to be webagoraphobes and don’t leave MySpace for anything! remember when AOL was the iron curtain of the web? hehe! It’s metaphor day - apparently!
Darren Daz Cox’s last blog post..“as art” art - for example “the blog post as art” is it art?
Ellen Wilsonon 27 Apr 2008 at 8:25 pm 6@Darren - You are very welcome to join the merry artist band!
I’m embarrassed to admit I’m not even sure how many people RSS my blog…it must be under blog stats somewhere.
I think the Web is exploding in an exponential, astronomical kind of way. It’s hard to keep up with it all. But yeah, I try not to get in a rut and learn new things all the time. Getting WordPress up and running was a major feat for me. And then there are all those photographers who are jazzy snazzy with Photoshop…the next thing I need to learn.
Kellyon 27 Apr 2008 at 8:34 pm 7Ellen,
Haha! I send out my standard “sorry to lose you” letter to email subscribers (personalized ‘cuz I know you a little), only to find I haven’t lost you, I’ve gained you through RSS! Happy to be a part of the crowd!
Happy RSS day, in advance. Nice crowd to be a part of.
Regards,
Kelly

Friaron 27 Apr 2008 at 9:49 pm 8Ellen, at least you know what an RSS comment feed is
I have no clue…
By the way, since you and Brett started referring to my Blog, my traffic has doubled.
At least with painting, I kind of feel like I know what I’m doing. I’m totally lost with this Blogging (Actually the other day, I got scolded by a family member, for using “swear words” in my writing). Sheesh.
Sure, Brett, I can teach you to paint. But it would require you to take time away from your writing. (Too bad there aren’t enough hours in the day, eh?)

Thanks for the link! I’m going through the other listed blogs to see what I’m missing. I swear, my feed reader is going to end up maxed out by the end of the week at this rate.

Thanks so much for the link love! It’s delightful for me. Yay! I’ve been waiting for May 1st to do my swingabout - is everyone coming early to this party but me? Am I all alone? What’s going on?
Gotta start compiling blogs. Gotta start compiling blogs.

I must admit to chowing down on a few of them myself!
I love RSS - and may not post it on my site, but sure am glad a bunch of folks will do.
Ellen, I also love your photos.

Amyon 28 Apr 2008 at 1:40 pm 15Hey Ellen -
Not related to RSS, but I love your photograph you used for this post.
I’m the anti-RSS goddess. For myself, that is. I have enough addictions. I’d be in RSS Anonymous by next Tuesday.

Brett Legreeon 01 May 2008 at 11:25 am 19Hi Ellen,
Not related to RSS, I see (via iGoogle) that you sent me an email, I can’t respond as the firewall here sometimes blocks Gmail…
but then after lunch it will probably work.

Ellen Wilsonon 01 May 2008 at 11:38 am 20@Mark - Thanks for stopping by! Anything I can do to help promote your photography - you are excellent.
@Karen - Aww. Thanks, my friend.
I took this in Venice. You would not believe the amount of fresh food they have there in the markets - everything from fruit to seafood. Tons of seafood- octopie, all kinds of fish…etc.
@Brett - I hope it works soon! Maybe you can get another email account that the firewall will accept.
Brett Legreeon 01 May 2008 at 12:55 pm 21@Ellen,
It is kind of weird. You can (usually) do an https connection, but once a day something “resets” and then you can’t. Then something else resets, and you can do it again. A cache somewhere I guess.

Friaron 01 May 2008 at 3:10 pm 22@ Ellen and Brett
Hahahah!
The key question to ask here, is not why the firewall dosen’t accept certain emails accounts, but WHY Brett is farting around with it in the first place. (Brett, aren’t you supposed to be a Good Little Worker Bee right now?)
Hey, I’m not judging. (After all, I’m doing the exact same thing rights now, as we speak.)
Chafin’ the Rod, boss. Chafin’ the Rod…

Friaron 02 May 2008 at 8:42 am 24Brett, WHY are you worried about the Firewall connection letting email go through?
Shouldn’t you..ummm….be WORKING…?
(I should talk…I’m leaving comments during office hours, as we speak).

Isabella Murphyon 30 May 2008 at 3:21 am 25Woo! Staying Paid is on that list! I’m touched, flattered, and tickled pink! Thank you Ellen…gmail ate my email to you and I’ve been cringing to admit it, and then I stroll back in and see this post…what’s a wandering nichelady to think about that?
I’m touched. Truly. I guess I’m not doing a good job hiding in the trenches, people are a’callin’ me out!

And yes, staying paid is high on the list!
